What I’m hearing…

The league waits with bated breath as the offseason finally creeps into view, which of course means executives are leaking like sieves and everyone suddenly “has sources.” Here’s what I’m hearing:

—Yes, Charlotte is interested in Jeff Bagwell. At this point it’s less rumor and more accepted fact around the league. Charlotte clearly thinks it’s time to accelerate the timeline and chase a playoff spot. Bagwell’s contract is enormous, but when has that ever stopped an ambitious front office from convincing itself a veteran bat is the missing piece?

—The upcoming draft class is being hyped by scouts and executives alike as one of the deepest in recent memory. Conveniently, every team with multiple first-round picks suddenly believes they’re building the next dynasty.

—There’s increasing buzz around Denny Neagle as a trade candidate, and San Diego keeps coming up as the favorite landing spot. Frankly, I’m not sure the deal makes much sense for either side, which admittedly only increases the odds that it happens.

—Shortly after retiring, Dickie Thon agreed to take on a front office role, with details still being finalized. A shocking development: respected veteran stays employed by organization that likes him.

—And finally, St. Louis is once again “open” to discussing Mariano Rivera in trade talks. Teams will call, executives will pretend to negotiate, and Rivera will almost certainly still be in St. Louis when spring rolls around. Some offseason traditions are sacred.
