Whisper Wire – Draft Eve Edition

As the DBL Draft nears, the rumor mill is loud. Here’s what I’ve picked up heading into one of the league’s busiest weeks:

🛫 San Diego’s Selling Spree: Baldwin Next?

The San Diego Padres have already overhauled half the roster—and word is, they aren’t done yet. Sources say that James Baldwin, one of the more intriguing young arms on the staff, may be the next piece to move. The 24-year-old comes with a manageable salary, and his upside is still viewed positively by rival teams despite some inconsistency.

San Diego’s front office has been aggressively trying to clear space by moving pending free agents, but Baldwin’s inclusion on the trade block signals a broader strategy: full-scale flexibility, even at the cost of short-term depth. While the on-field product will likely be improved come April, Padres fans may not recognize the names on the jerseys.

📉 Prediction: One Team Trades Out of Round One

With the 1995 DBL Draft set to begin tomorrow, don’t expect total chaos—but I’ll go on record now: at least one team will trade out of the first round entirely.

While many clubs are locked in with their targets, there’s growing chatter about teams trying to gain future assets or move down for depth. Boston, sitting at pick 8, has made it clear they’re open to moving down. But a lack of consensus on the 8th-best player in the class has dulled interest. As one scouting director told me: “It’s a five-player draft. Everything else is preference and projection.”

Don’t be shocked if a late-first team sends their pick packing.

💸 Boston Taps Out of Salary Intake Mode

Speaking of Boston, it seems the Joey Cora trade was the final chapter in their money-absorbing storyline. After months of acting as the DBL’s unofficial salary landfill, the team has hit his limit.

The Red Sox don’t have a first-round pick next year, meaning there’s some incentive to field a competitive roster in ’96. That said, they won’t be shopping in the free agent aisle this winter.

What surprised most around the league was the one-year extension for Lee Stevens. One rival GM called him “the most aggressively shopped player in the DBL last year.” No takers. And now? He’s staying in Fenway—at least for one more forgettable season.

🧮 Cap Crunch in Minnesota

In Minnesota, the accounting department is sweating bullets.

The Twins are already projected to be over the cap for next year, and that’s before extending key free agents. Chief among them is Todd Zeile, who the team wants to retain. But to do so, they’ll need to move money.

Names floated as possible casualties? Koji Akiyama, and maybe even Rob Dibble, though the latter would require a decent return.

The team isn’t in teardown mode—but with an expensive core and little flexibility, Darren may be forced to sacrifice a key contributor just to keep the band together.

Juan Gone Not Gone

To those dreaming of Juan Gonzalez in a new uniform next season—wake up.

Despite swirling rumors that the two-time MVP could test the market, team leadership shut it down in colorful fashion. When I asked one source to confirm that Gonzalez may walk, the response: “Fuck you.”

So… yeah. That tracks.

It’s no surprise. Gonzalez is the kind of franchise cornerstone who, when healthy, can change a division race. But for now, he’s staying put. Those clubs hoarding cap space hoping to take a run at him? Time to rework those spreadsheets.

🎒 Tony Gwynn: Just Visiting?

The Giants made headlines acquiring Tony Gwynn—but don’t buy the long-term stay narrative.

Sources close to the team say that Gwynn “isn’t planning to unpack his bags.” While San Francisco’s rebuild continues, Gwynn’s name is being floated in conversations with contenders looking for a high-contact, low-drama veteran bat.

He’s not cheap, and he doesn’t fit every club’s timeline, but if he sticks around, at least he’ll sell tickets and sign autographs. Still, this feels more like a short layover than a new home.

Draft. Trades. Extensions. Rumors.
It’s all happening.
