Whisper Wire – July 11, 2025

With front offices still licking their wounds from October—or emboldened by success—trade season is fully underway across the DBL. Here’s what I’m hearing on the Whisper Wire:

🔄 More Movement in Round One?

The first round of the 1995 DBL Draft isn’t quite locked in yet. Sources tell Whisper Wire that the Chicago Cubs, currently holding the 20th overall pick, have had discussions with at least three teams about flipping that pick for an impact bat or arm that could help now. The Cubs are believed to be targeting players with control through 1996 or beyond.

Meanwhile, Pittsburgh’s 18th pick has popped up in a pair of trade talks. No clear word yet on what the team is asking for, but one source said it’s “not a pick swap,” which may suggest the Pirates are looking to convert the pick into a roster-ready contributor.

🏞️ Golden Gate Goodbye?

The San Francisco Giants may have pulled the trigger on several players already, but they might not be done dealing. Word around the league is that Bob Sebra is next on the block—or at the very least, next on the owner’s personal trade wish list.

Sebra, 33, just wrapped up an 18-win, 233.1-inning campaign with a 3.01 ERA and a 4.2 WAR season. He’s been the picture of consistency and durability. But with a sizable salary and a farm system needing replenishment, the Giants may be looking to cash out while his value is high.

His postseason résumé (including a dominant 30.2 IP with a 2.05 ERA this October) should appeal to any team looking to upgrade their rotation with a proven October arm.

🧳 Dodgers Say Goodbye to Walla Walla

Walla Walla, we hardly knew ye.

The Los Angeles Dodgers are ending their minor league partnership with Walla Walla and relocating their affiliate to Naperville, Illinois. The move is likely geography- and resource-driven, giving the Dodgers a more central scouting and player development hub in the Midwest. The new team name and branding are TBA, but Naperville officials are reportedly “thrilled.”

🛒 Palmer and Burks: Available but Expensive

If you’re a GM, you’ve probably gotten a phone call from Jose Mata about Dean Palmer or Ellis Burks.

The Toronto Blue Jays are aggressively shopping both players to reallocate salary and rebalance the roster—but sources say talks have been mostly one-sided. Extension numbers for both have made some teams hesitant. No deal appears imminent, and Mata is said to be waiting for “a clear win” before pulling the trigger.

💸 Polakoff’s Price Tag: Matt Young Edition

Teams looking for rotation help might want to dial up David Polakoff, but don’t expect a clearance sale.

Matt Young, who quietly finished top 10 in the league in several key pitching metrics last year, is reportedly not off the table—but the Montreal Expos GM isn’t entertaining light offers. The 33-year-old southpaw has one year left at $900,000, which could scare off some teams. Still, with few front-line starters available, he’s arguably the best pitcher not already involved in trade rumors.

One rival executive said, “Polakoff knows what he’s got. He’s not in a rush to deal, but he’ll talk.”

🧱 No Williams Departure Expected

Lastly, put the Matt Williams rumors to bed—at least for now.

After moving Jim Edmonds, St. Louis GM Adam Rabel appears to be settling back into a more conservative salary approach. Though Williams’ name came up in light discussions, don’t expect him to follow Edmonds out the door. One source close to the front office told Whisper Wire that “Williams isn’t going anywhere unless someone offers a lot more than what Ken Caminiti got Orlando.”
