Burkett Shuts the Door, Senators Blank Giants to Punch World Series Ticket

SAN FRANCISCO — The Washington Senators are headed to the World Series.

In a decisive Game 7 showdown at a packed Candlestick Park, veteran right-hander John Burkett delivered the start of a lifetime, blanking the San Francisco Giants over 8.1 masterful innings as Washington clinched the United League pennant with a 4–0 victory.

With the win, the Senators take the series 4–3 and advance to face the Kansas City Royals in the 1995 Doubleday Baseball League Championship.

“This is what you play for,” Burkett said amid the champagne-soaked celebration. “Game 7, on the road, all the pressure—and our guys never flinched.”

Game Summary

The Senators struck early and never looked back. After Carl Everett worked a first-inning walk, Alex Rodriguez drove him home with a sharp single to right. Then in the third, both A-Rod and Everett launched solo homers off Giants starter Scott Sanders—each coming with two outs.

Rafael Palmeiro put the final nail in the coffin with a solo blast in the eighth off Jeff Poole, his second of the series.

That was more than enough for Burkett, who allowed just five hits and two walks over 137 pitches. He kept the Giants off balance all night, inducing weak contact and working through tight spots in the middle innings.

“John was a bulldog out there,” said Senators manager. “He gave us everything he had—and that was everything we needed.”

Series MVP: Carl Everett

Everett earned League Championship MVP honors with a .357 average, .438 OBP, 4 homers, and 10 runs scored over seven games. His presence at the top of the order sparked Washington’s offense all series.
