Howard Johnson Reaches 1,500 Runs Scored Milestone

August 16, 1995 marked yet another milestone in the storybook career of Howard Johnson, as the Cleveland slugger scored the 1,500th run of his career. The run came in the first inning on a double by cleanup hitter Carlos Baerga, adding another historic chapter to what has already been a legacy-defining season.

“It’s been a season to remember,” Johnson said. “The home runs, the hits, the runs scored—each one matters, but 1,500 runs? That’s a team stat. It means I’ve been surrounded by good hitters and good moments.”

A Season of Milestones

In the past three weeks alone, Johnson has:

  • Hit his 700th home run (Aug 2)
  • Collected his 2,000th hit (Aug 11)
  • Scored his 1,500th run (Aug 16)

Each accomplishment stands tall on its own. Taken together, they underscore just how complete and prolific Johnson’s career has been. At just 34, he’s still producing elite numbers and leading the charge in Cleveland’s lineup.

A Generational Offensive Force

Howard Johnson’s impact on the game is measured not just in individual milestones but in his all-around dominance:

  • 2,010 hits
  • 711 home runs
  • 1,640 RBIs
  • 1,500 runs scored
  • 401 stolen bases
  • Career line: .251 AVG / .335 OBP / .564 SLG / .899 OPS
  • 134 OPS+, 137 wRC+, 60.6 WAR

He’s the only active player in the DBL with 700+ HR, 2,000+ hits, 1,500+ runs, and 400+ steals—a testament to rare versatility and durability.

1995: Still Elite

Despite being well into his 30s, Johnson remains a top offensive force. In 127 games this year, he’s already hit 48 home runs, driven in 101, and scored 76 runs—putting him on pace to lead the league in homers for a record-setting sixth time.

“He’s not just padding stats,” said Cleveland manager. “He’s winning games. The power’s still there. The bat speed. The IQ. It’s all there.”

A Legacy Still Unfolding

With each milestone crossed, Johnson’s Hall of Fame case grows stronger—and more unique. Few players in DBL history have impacted the game in so many categories for so long. From the blistering home run totals to the consistent run production, HoJo has redefined what sustained offensive greatness looks like.

And as the 1995 season winds down, Johnson isn’t slowing—he’s sprinting toward a legacy that will be remembered for generations.
