June 1: Mitchell Dazzles, Mitchell Homers, Osborne Shines in a Loss
John Mitchell was untouchable for the Athletics, striking out 11 and going the distance in a 2–1 win over the Giants. San Francisco has suddenly lost four straight, and the rest of the West is starting to notice.
Kevin Mitchell did everything he could for the Spiders, going 3-for-3 with two home runs and two RBIs, but Cleveland still fell 5–3 to the Red Sox. It’s been that kind of year in Cleveland.
Donovan Osborne was sharp for the Dodgers, tossing 7 innings of 1-hit ball, but San Diego walked it off in the ninth with a sac fly by Mike Simms. LA takes the loss, but Osborne was easily the best pitcher on the field.
Also:
- Orlando stunned the Yankees 2–1 with a walk-off homer from Jose Valentin and 8 strong innings from Wilson Alvarez.
June 2: Glavine and Mussina Cruise, Schilling Goes 10, and Villanueva Walks It Off
Tom Glavine tossed a complete-game shutout as the Mets blanked the A’s 8–0, silencing any momentum Oakland had after their win over the Giants.
Mike Mussina struck out 12 and gave up just three hits in a dominant outing as the Reds cruised 7–1 over the Rangers. That’s two stellar starts in a row for Mussina—he’s locked in.
Curt Schilling was relentless again, going 10 innings with 8 strikeouts and giving up just one run in a 3–2 Rockies win over Detroit. He didn’t get the W, but Colorado will take every inning he can give them.
Other Highlights:
- Hector Villanueva hit a walk-off homer in the 9th to lift Toronto over the Giants 2–1, handing San Francisco their fourth straight loss.
- Greg Maddux pitched 10 innings as the Dodgers topped the Expos 4–3 in extras.
- Boston outlasted Chicago 3–2 in 10 innings on a walk-off single by Kevin Seitzer. That’s eight straight losses for the White Sox.
June 3: Randy, Saito, and Schilling Lead the Pitching Parade
Randy Johnson returned to form for the Seattle Pilots, throwing a 4-hit, 11-strikeout complete game against the Senators. The Big Unit is back to being the ace Seattle needs.
Masaki Saito posted a shutout of his own, leading the Spiders past the Cubs 3–0. Saito scattered 4 hits over 9 innings, continuing a quietly effective season for the Japanese righty.
Ed Correa struck out 12 Dodgers over 7.1 innings in a strong 8–2 win for the Expos. Montreal remains the class of the East, and their rotation is a big reason why.
More from around the league:
- Barry Bonds crushed a walk-off homer in the bottom of the 9th as the Red Sox came back to beat the White Sox 9–8. Chicago has now lost nine in a row, and morale’s circling the drain.
- Pittsburgh outlasted the Twins 7–5 in 13 innings, thanks to a two-run homer from Craig Shipley.
- John Valentin hit a walk-off homer in the 11th as the Cardinals edged Orlando 3–2, keeping their grip on the division lead.
