Wexler’s Mock – Pick #6

You may not like the style of this mock draft so far. You may think I’m too obsessed with upside, too dismissive of “safe” players, or too willing to make sweeping declarations about 19-year-olds who still look like they need permission slips to leave school early.

That’s fine.

But six picks in, the board has fallen almost perfectly for every team involved, and the Baltimore Orioles are probably thrilled they ignored the noise and waited patiently.

Because sitting here at Pick #6 is a player who fits exactly what this organization desperately needs:

A legitimate offensive centerpiece.

Enter J.D. Drew.

Baltimore is another franchise with holes all over the roster and several directions they could reasonably take. They could chase pitching depth. They could gamble on upside elsewhere. They could overthink things entirely and draft some “high-floor college performer” who eventually becomes a very respectable .271 hitter with eight home runs for twelve seasons.

Instead, they land a potential star.

Drew is beginning to fill out physically, and the offensive profile is outstanding across the board. The contact projects beautifully, the power is real, and the plate discipline might honestly be the most exciting part of the package. A potential 17 eye rating is the type of thing that turns good hitters into lineup engines.

This is a player who could comfortably hit second on a championship-caliber team someday.

And unlike some bat-only corner outfielder who needs to slug .600 to justify existing, Drew brings athletic value too.

The defensive profile is fascinating.

Right now, he grades well in right field, but the underlying range numbers strongly suggest there’s at least a playable future in center field. No, he’s not Carlos Beltran. Let’s calm down before Orioles fans start photoshopping Hall of Fame plaques. But if you can stick a player with this offensive ceiling in center and survive defensively?

That becomes incredibly valuable very quickly.

A potential center fielder with plus contact, plus power, elite strike-zone awareness, and good speed is exactly the kind of player rebuilding organizations dream about building around.

And Baltimore desperately needs players like that.

This franchise doesn’t need complementary pieces right now. They need stars. They need impact talent. They need hitters opposing teams actually have to gameplan around instead of treating the middle of the lineup like a scheduled bathroom break.

J.D. Drew gives them that.

Easy fit. Big upside. Strong value.

And for a draft that continues to fall beautifully for teams picking near the top, Baltimore may have quietly walked away with one of the best offensive players in the entire class.
