Wexler’s Mock – Pick #3

Apparently I committed a cardinal sin by suggesting Carlos Beltran belonged a microscopic fraction below Kerry Wood and Roy Halladay as a prospect. For that, I’d like to formally apologize to the International Carlos Beltran Fan Club, who reacted to that take as if I’d suggested drafting a parking cone ahead of him.

To clarify: Beltran is outstanding.

The point was never that Beltran wasn’t elite. The point was simply this — truly dominant frontline pitching is harder to find than elite bats. You can disagree if you want, but I’m right, so let’s move on.

In any case, Beltran’s dramatic and emotionally devastating slide comes to an end here at Pick #3, where the Detroit Tigers walk away from their trade-down masterpiece looking awfully smart.

And honestly? This is exactly why you make the trade.

Detroit moved off the top pick, picked up additional first-round capital, and still lands one of the true blue-chip talents in the class. That’s the dream scenario. Had Halladay or Wood fallen instead, the Tigers probably sprint the card to the podium just the same. But ending up with Beltran is hardly some consolation prize.

Carlos Beltran is, quite simply, the best hitter available in this draft.

Period.

Assuming normal development, I’d project him as a future top-9 hitter in all of baseball according to my proprietary ranking formula, which is fully copyrighted, legally protected, and absolutely not being shared with anyone.

The bat is special. He’s going to hit for average, drive balls into the gaps all day long, develop real power, and provide impact on both sides of the baseball. And unlike some corner outfield masher who needs 45 home runs to justify existing, Beltran does all this while playing a premium defensive position. Those players don’t exactly grow on trees.

Will he become a perennial Gold Glove candidate? Probably.

Will Tigers fans immediately begin comparing him to every great center fielder in franchise history after a good two-week stretch in May? Absolutely.

Would I still personally prefer a true ace over a true superstar hitter? Yes.

Does that matter at all right now? Not even a little.

Detroit needed foundational talent. They traded down, accumulated assets, and still landed arguably the safest superstar in the entire class. That’s a massive win for a rebuilding organization desperately trying to inject relevance back into the franchise.

Easy pick. Obvious pick. Best player available by a mile.
