Wexler’s Mock – Pick 20

Pick 20 – Kansas City Royals

Selection: OF Mark Kotsay

Some picks feel inevitable. Others feel like arguments with yourself at a whiteboard at 1 a.m.
This one was the latter.

At No. 20, the Royals find themselves in that tricky borderland where need, value, and philosophy intersect. On one hand, this is a perfectly logical spot to dip back into pitching—Brett Tomko, for example, makes a lot of sense in a vacuum. On the other hand… can anyone really picture Kansas City passing on Mark Kotsay?

In the end, nostalgia wins. But it’s more than just that.

Kotsay is a fascinating player:

  • Elite defender in right field
  • Perfectly capable in center
  • A bat that isn’t going to carry an offense, but absolutely won’t sink one
  • A classic bottom-third lineup guy who does his job and doesn’t make mistakes

But most importantly—he fits exactly how Kansas City builds rosters.

This team thrives on optionality. Mixing. Matching. Platooning. Pinch-hitting. Defensive swapping. They construct lineups like they’re solving a jigsaw puzzle, and Kotsay is the kind of piece that just naturally fits.

Are there questions? Sure.

He’ll almost certainly need a platoon partner. He’s not going to post flashy home run totals. And he’s unlikely to be handed an everyday role—at least not immediately. But as the organization stares at several outfielders approaching free agency, having a safe, stable, defensively gifted option entering the pipeline matters.

And the value?
According to my proprietary ranking system, Kotsay is the 19th-best hitter in the entire draft class. Getting that at 20—while filling a looming positional need—is entirely justifiable.

He’s not a star.
He’s not a reach.
He’s not a savior.

He’s simply a Kansas City Royal.
And sometimes, that’s the easiest part of the equation.
