Wexler’s Ledger: Seattle Finally Finds Someone to Take Chris Haney

The Seattle Pilots trade SP Chris Haney to the Milwaukee Creams for SP Amaury Telemaco.

At long last, the Chris Haney saga is over.

After what felt like six straight months of Seattle posting “Chris Haney available” every other day, someone finally blinked. Congratulations to Milwaukee for ending the longest-running classified ad in DBL history.

To be clear, Haney isn’t bad. In fact, he’s been one of the few competent pitchers left standing in Seattle after the franchise detonated the roster earlier this season. He’s sitting at 8–11 with a 3.73 ERA, which lines up nicely with his career reputation: a quietly solid, slightly-above-average starter who will never headline a rotation but also won’t actively ruin your evening.

Of course, Haney picked a wonderful moment to remind everyone he’s still human. His final two starts before the trade: 10⅓ innings, 17 hits, 13 runs. Nothing says “deadline acquisition” quite like a pre-trade meltdown.

Still, Milwaukee doesn’t need perfection. They just need innings from someone who won’t spontaneously combust while they’re chasing a pennant. Haney fits that job description just fine.

Seattle’s Return: The “Technically a Prospect” Package

In exchange, Seattle receives Amaury Telemaco, currently ranked #48 on the prospect list, which looks nice until you read the fine print.

Telemaco is:

  • Out for the season
  • Entering a contract year next season
  • Basically fully developed already

In other words, he’s less “future cornerstone” and more “maybe a fifth starter if everything breaks right.”

This is… not exactly the type of return you expect after months of relentless marketing. At one point Seattle was shopping Haney like he was the last pitcher left in baseball. The final return suggests the rest of the league never quite shared that enthusiasm.

And here’s the uncomfortable part: if the market thought Haney was worth more, Seattle would have gotten more.

No one forced them to take this deal.

Final Thoughts

Milwaukee gets a useful innings-eater for a playoff race.
Seattle finally gets to stop posting “Chris Haney available” every morning.

Honestly, that alone might make the trade worth it.

Trade Grades

Milwaukee Creams: A
They add stable rotation depth for a contender at minimal cost.

Seattle Pilots: C+
They get a ranked prospect… technically. But after all that buildup, the return feels like the league politely shrugging
