One Trade Each Team Should Make: Colorado Rockies

A series by your favorite esteemed writer Graham Wexler looking at one potential off-season trade per team.

Colorado Rockies Acquire CL Scott Radinsky from Los Angeles Dodgers for a 1995 2nd-Round Pick

The Rockies don’t need to overhaul their bullpen — but they do need to finish games with a little more certainty. Despite a playoff-caliber roster, Colorado’s middle relief has been shaky, and too many late leads have slipped away in the thin Denver air. Enter Scott Radinsky, a battle-tested lefty closer. Radinsky saved 16 games with a 2.00 ERA over 36 innings, striking out 37 and allowing just 3 home runs. Lefties hit a comical .083 against him, and he’s got a long track record of success (2.50 career ERA, 79 career saves). He’s not overpowering — his stuff grades out at just a 10 — but his movement and command make him a nightmare for hitters in high-leverage spots.

Colorado already has a strong setup/closer combo with Joey Eischen, Mike Timlin, and Robb Nen, but Radinsky gives them something they’ve lacked: a dependable lefty who can get outs in the 9th against either side. That allows the Colorado manager to mix and match matchups with confidence, especially in a playoff series.

With a weaker 1995 draft class, Colorado makes the smart decision to flip its 2nd-round pick for a known commodity. The Dodgers, who are likely retooling, gladly move a 27-year-old reliever in his final contract year for future value.

Proposed Deal:

  • Colorado Rockies get: CL Scott Radinsky
  • Los Angeles Dodgers get: 1995 2nd-Round Pick

It’s a clean fit: Colorado adds stability, L.A. adds flexibility. And for a Rockies team on the rise, this could be the move that gets them back to October.
