Day 4 Recap: Alou’s Heroics, McGriff’s Walk-Off, and a Crucial Shutout Shift the Balance

Giants 8, Mets 5 (10 innings) – Series tied 2–2
Moises Alou put the San Francisco Giants on his back and slugged them right back into the Division Series. Facing elimination energy in hostile Shea Stadium, Alou crushed two home runs—including a 3-run bomb in the 10th—to lead the Giants past the Mets, 8–5.

Alou finished the night with 7 RBIs, a new UL playoff extra-inning record, driving in runs with a sac fly, a 3-run blast in the 6th, and then the decisive 3-run shot in extras off Jim Bullinger.

New York had stormed back in the bottom of the 9th behind pinch-hitter Pedro Muñoz’s stunning grand slam, but it wasn’t enough. Takehiro Ishii gave up five earned runs across 7.1 innings, while Floyd Youmans kept the Mets in check through 8 frames.

Player of the Game: Moises Alou (2-4, 2 HR, 7 RBI)
Next up: Game 5 at Shea – Bob Sebra vs. Jason Isringhausen

Senators 5, Expos 4 – Washington leads series 3–1
Fred McGriff delivered the knockout punch. In a tense, back-and-forth affair at RFK, “The Crime Dog” singled home the winning run in the bottom of the 9th to lift the Washington Senators to a 5–4 walk-off win over the Montreal Expos.

Mike Morgan went 8 innings and gutted out the win despite allowing 10 hits. Alex Rodriguez and Carl Everett both homered in the 2nd inning, and McGriff’s clutch knock off Dave Leiper sealed it.

Montreal got doubles from Mike Sweeney and Jeff Kent and tied the game with a two-run rally in the 7th, but the bullpen couldn’t hold.

Player of the Game: Mike Morgan (8 IP, 4 ER, 5 K)
Next up: Game 5 – Pedro Martínez vs. John Burkett

Pirates 1, Royals 0 – Series tied 2–2
Shane Reynolds turned in the pitching performance Kansas City didn’t want to see. The Pirates righty struck out nine across 6.1 scoreless innings, and Pittsburgh used a 7th-inning RBI single from Craig Counsell to steal Game 4, 1–0, and even the series.

Mickey Tettleton’s lineup couldn’t solve Reynolds or the Pirates bullpen trio of Hoffman and Harvey, combining for 12 strikeouts and seven stranded runners. Kansas City’s Mark Guthrie was sharp as well (7 IP, 1 ER), but lacked support.

Player of the Game: Shane Reynolds (6.1 IP, 0 ER, 9 K)
Next up: Game 5 – Kevin Brown vs. Kevin Appier

Cubs 8, Reds 2 – Chicago leads series 3–1
The Cubs exploded for seven runs between the 6th and 7th innings and now stand one win from the Championship Series. Mark Grace homered, walked, and scored three times, while Gino Peña launched his third home run of the series to pace Chicago’s 8–2 rout.

Mike Hampton pitched 8 strong innings, giving up just two runs while scattering four extra-base hits. Jose Rijo left early with an injury for Cincinnati, forcing the Reds to burn through four relievers.

Grace and Peña now have five home runs between them in this series, and the Cubs are hitting .319 as a team.

Player of the Game: Mark Grace (2-3, HR, 3 R, 2 RBI)
Next up: Game 5 – David Wells vs. Jeff D. Robinson
