May 26: Dodgers Blast Off, McDonald Blanks Expos, and Walk-Offs Everywhere
Melvin Nieves put on a show in Colorado, going 3-for-5 with 2 home runs and 4 RBIs to power the Dodgers past the Rockies 12–6. Right behind him, Ryan Klesko added 2 homers and 2 RBIs of his own, helping LA continue their rise in the West.
Meanwhile, Ben McDonald silenced the Expos in an impressive 8-inning, 3-hit shutout effort as the Orioles stunned Montreal 1–0. It’s rare to see the Expos this quiet—and rarer still for the last-place O’s to be the ones doing the silencing.
Around the league:
- Boston edged the Yankees 2–1 thanks to Barry Bonds’ clutch 9th-inning double and 8 strong innings from Roger Salkeld.
- John Cangelosi walked it off for the Pirates with a solo shot in the 9th to beat the Spiders 4–3.
- Al Martin gave the Senators a late win with a 9th-inning homer against the Mets in a tight 5–4 victory.
May 27: Schilling Unhittable, Clark and Perez Shine, and Spiders Bite Back
Curt Schilling turned in one of the best starts of the season: a complete-game 3-hit shutout with 16 strikeouts against the Dodgers. He didn’t walk a soul. The Rockies needed it, and Schilling delivered in dominant fashion.
Will Clark stayed hot for the Blue Jays, hitting two home runs and driving in five in a 6–0 win over Detroit. Toronto remains in firm control of the Wild Card lead.
Carlos Perez tossed a gem for the Senators, allowing just one run over 9 innings in a statement win against the Mets, 8–1. That Wild Card race in the East? It’s heating up fast.
Other action:
- Cleveland edged the Pirates 6–5 in 10 innings thanks to Marquis Grissom’s RBI single.
- Oakland walked off the Padres 2–1 in 13 innings—yes, you read that right, the A’s won a game.
May 28: Extra-Inning Mayhem, Lieberthal Goes Deep Twice, and Finley Walks It Off
Mike Lieberthal crushed two homers and drove in three, but the Yankees still fell in 14 innings to the Red Sox, 9–7. It was Mike Blowers who had the final word with a 2-run double in the top of the 14th.
Kal Daniels helped the Twins edge the Rangers 6–5 in 10 innings, going 3-for-4 with 2 HRs and the game-winning RBI double.
Denny Hocking quietly had a strong night for the Dodgers, going 3-for-4 with a homer and 3 RBIs in a 7–4 win over Colorado.
Elsewhere:
- Matt Williams sent the Cards home happy with a solo homer in the 11th as St. Louis beat the White Sox 3–2.
- Steve Finley capped off a 15-inning thriller with a walk-off home run as the Giants topped the Pilots 5–4. That’s three games in a row the Giants have won in the 9th or later. They’re now 40–15—best in the league.
