Recap: May 11th to 13th

May 11: Pena’s Perfect Day, Wilson Drives in Four, and Hamilton Dials In

Geronimo Peña had himself a flawless day at the plate—3-for-3 with a homer, two RBIs, three runs, and two walks. More importantly, he helped power a dramatic Cubs comeback over the Rangers. Down 5–2 entering the bottom of the 8th, Chicago rallied for six runs across the final two frames to win it 8–5.

Dan Wilson paced a relentless Cardinals offense, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs in a 12–3 rout of the Twins.

Joey Hamilton tossed 8 shutout innings as the Reds blanked Boston 3–0, continuing their trend of solid starting pitching.

Around the League:

  • The White Sox edged the Royals 6–5, scoring the go-ahead run in the 9th.
  • Tigers pulled off a nail-biter, scoring in the top of the 9th and barely hanging on as the Orioles nearly tied it in the bottom half.

May 12: Magadan Mashes, Valentin Vibes, and Clemens Gets Robbed

Dave Magadan erupted against the Giants, going 3-for-5 with a double, homer, four RBIs, and three runs in a 12–2 blowout for the Mets—one of their best team efforts of the season.

John Valentin continued his hot streak for the Cardinals with two homers and three RBIs in a 9–2 win over the Reds. St. Louis’ offense continues to hum along, with different guys stepping up every night.

Roger Clemens deserved the win—and didn’t get it. The Dodgers ace went 8 strong, but DiPoto blew the save in the 9th, and it took an 11th-inning push for L.A. to salvage a 3–2 win over Detroit.

Elsewhere:

  • Toronto stunned the red-hot Pilots with a 9th-inning walk-off homer from Dan Pasqua.
  • The Spiders walked it off in extras, putting another dent in the Royals’ confidence.

May 13: Rivera’s Redemption, King Rules the Hill, and Gant Goes Deep

Rubén Rivera delivered the knockout blow for the Senators, going 3-for-3 with two homers and four RBIs, including the game-winning hit in the bottom of the 9th to beat Oakland 6–5. The Senators are still below .500, but this kind of game might be the jolt they need.

Eric King was electric for the Cubs—a complete game shutout with 10 Ks and zero walks. Chicago is now 9–2 in May, riding serious momentum after a .500 April.

Ron Gant punished Colorado pitching, launching two homers and a double in a perfect 3-for-3 night as the Orioles won 5–1.

Other Action:

  • Pittsburgh pulled off a late-game stunner, clawing back from a 5–1 deficit against the Rangers. Two in the 8th, one in the 9th, and two in extras sealed a 6–5 comeback win. That’s the kind of game that sticks with you—for better or worse.
