The Cleveland Spiders will be without left fielder Darryl Strawberry for the next three games after the league handed down a suspension for his actions during and after Wednesday’s game against the St. Louis Browns at Busch Stadium.
The incident unfolded in the later innings when Strawberry took issue with a called third strike. Frustrated, the veteran slugger erupted at the home plate umpire, earning an immediate ejection. However, rather than leaving the field promptly, Strawberry continued his verbal assault for another five minutes before manager finally pulled him away.
If that had been the end of it, perhaps a fine would have sufficed. But Strawberry escalated the situation further in postgame interviews, openly mocking the umpire’s vision.
“He was blind today. They played ‘Three Blind Mice’ for him. If he doesn’t know the words to the song, I’m sure we can get it in Braille, so he can follow along,” Strawberry told reporters.
The league office swiftly responded by suspending Strawberry for three games, a clear indication that public ridicule of officials will not be tolerated.
Struggles at the Plate Continue
Strawberry’s outburst comes at a frustrating time for the 33-year-old, who has struggled at the plate early this season. Through the first week of play, he is hitting just .161 with two home runs. While he remains a power threat, the Spiders had hoped for more consistency from the veteran as they try to keep pace in a competitive race.
With Strawberry out of the lineup for the next three games, Cleveland will need to find production elsewhere. Whether this suspension serves as a wake-up call or adds to his frustrations remains to be seen.
For now, one thing is clear—when Strawberry returns, all eyes (and ears) will be on him.
