Cubs Close Out First Round with CF Marvin Benard

With the final pick of the first round, the Chicago Cubs selected center fielder Marvin Benard, a player who brings a solid bat and elite baserunning but comes with some defensive concerns.

Benard’s hitting profile is well-rounded, with most of his ratings sitting above average. While he won’t be a big power threat, he should still hit around 10 home runs per season, making him a reliable offensive contributor. His real weapon, however, is his speed.

Once he gets on base, Benard has outstanding baserunning instincts and a strong stealing ability. Expect him to be a constant threat on the basepaths, swiping his fair share of bags and putting pressure on opposing pitchers.

Benard has the ability to play all three outfield positions, but the issue is his arm strength—or lack thereof. His range is decent, and he won’t be a liability in terms of errors, but don’t expect him to gun down runners at home plate. More often than not, his throws will need a relay man to have any chance of cutting down a runner.

Because of that, his best fit defensively remains unclear. If he stays in center, his speed can help cover ground, but in left field, his weak arm would be less of an issue. The Cubs will need to find the right spot for him.

Chicago is betting on Benard’s bat and speed to carry his value. If he refines his approach at the plate, he could become a top-of-the-order spark plug. His defense may always be a question mark, but if he’s getting on base and causing havoc, the Cubs will find a way to keep him in the lineup.
