Yankees Land Mike Grace with 17th Pick, but Patience Will Be Key

The New York Yankees selected Mike Grace with the 17th pick, adding a solid pitching prospect to their system. Grace has the potential to be a valuable rotation piece once he’s had time to develop. He enters the organization with a 10 in Stuff, 13 in Movement, and 16 in Control, with room to improve—especially in Control, where he could gain a few points.

Grace features a three-pitch mix: a fastball, curveball, and changeup. While his tools are promising, his current ratings suggest he’ll need some seasoning before he’s ready for the big leagues. The smart move would be to start him in Triple-A, allow him to refine his command, and potentially give him a September call-up. By 1996, he should be ready to contribute at the major league level.

The Yankees, desperate to return to contention, might be tempted to fast-track his development, but patience is key here. Rushing Grace to the majors could do more harm than good. If handled correctly, he has the makings of a reliable big-league starter.
