Hideo Nomo Joins Minnesota Twins as #2 Overall Draft Pick

The Minnesota Twins made a decisive move in the draft, selecting Japanese star Hideo Nomo with the second overall pick to bolster a rotation desperate for reinforcements. Nomo brings an electrifying arsenal, headlined by a blazing fastball and devastating forkball, to a pitching staff anchored by Juan Guzman, Pedro Astacio, and Darren Oliver. While the Twins ranked 12th—last in the Federal League—in eight of the ten major pitching categories last season, they led the league in strikeouts. The addition of Nomo, whose elite Stuff (17) will generate even more swings and misses, ensures that Minnesota’s ability to rack up Ks will only improve.

For the Twins, the selection of Nomo was a no-brainer. A workhorse with 19 stamina and immediate ace potential, he’s poised to help Minnesota close the gap on the Federal League’s contenders. The Twins are eager to end a playoff drought that has lasted since 1978. In the 19-year history of the DBL, Minnesota has only reached the postseason twice: once in 1976, when they won the inaugural championship, and again in 1978. Nomo’s arrival signals the organization’s intent to return to relevance and, hopefully, the playoffs. If he lives up to expectations, Nomo could be the cornerstone of a resurgence that will bring long-awaited success back to the Twin Cities.
